The B.U.F.F. Formula
The B.U.F.F. formula is based on two simple rules, "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one or the few" and "character counts". B.U.F.F. recruits only team oriented players. Ball Hogs, black holes and unfriendly, argumentative, confrontational personalities are eventually weeded out.
Players are recruited for their natural, innate skills. A tiger does not change his stripes, B.U.F.F. will not ask a player to change the way they play, but a "me-first" player who cannot play B.U.F.F.'s team first style and contribute to their team's success will not be invited back to play. On any team there is a need for a shooter, a passer, a rebounder, a defender, etc. The most valuable players are those who can willingly play multiple positions and various styles for the benefit of their team.
Of course first and foremost is to have fun on the court and enjoy the fellowship of their teammates.

A Little Bit About B.U.F.F.
B.U.F.F. Saturdays are the main event. We also have the Friday Night Lights games on Friday evenings. We play just for fun. So ultra-intense types, hot heads, sore losers, ball hogs, unfriendly and anti-social players don't make the cut and aren't invited back. We look for players who have a strong passion for the game of basketball who also have total self control of their emotions and know that we are just playing a game.
Our players range from about 25 to 50+ years old, ranging in height from 5' 5" to 6'5". We have players of various skill levels, from recreational, weekend warriors to former collegiate players. B.U.F.F. is not an Elitist league, in fact most of the players are considerably past their primes. B.U.F.F. is not a collection of All Stars, rather a group of compatible players on and off the court. You don't have to be a superstar, there's something for everyone. B.U.F.F. is a friendly league, we call it Gentlemen's Basketball. The games are based on the honor system.
Technically we are a pick up game but B.U.F.F. is very organized and structured to have a league feel to it. B.U.F.F. plays twice a month on Saturday mornings from 8 am to 11 am from April thru December. Friday Night Lights (FNL) meets on random Friday nights from 7 - 9 pm also from April thru December.
The games are designed to maximize playing time and minimize sitting time. In B.U.F.F. all players are guaranteed two 20 minute games. For the Saturday games you will usually be at the gym for a minimum of one hour and a maximum of 90 minutes. You can stay longer to enjoy the other games and fellowship with your friends if you like.
Participation is by invitation only. Players are invited via email. It is crucial that all players reply promptly to all email correspondence. Slow replies can result in being dropped down on the depth chart or even waived from the league.
Gym fees are only $7 per outing.
We play indoors in a beautiful but short court in Hermosa Beach. The shorter court is ideal for B.U.F.F.'s older players.
Teamwork, camaraderie and having fun are the most important things in B.U.F.F. Winning is not at the expense of friendship and sportsmanship. A player should not have a "win at all costs" attitude. Any altercations, or displays of bad temper, disrespect or unsportsmanlike conduct, especially from a new (probationary) player, could result in not being invited back.
B.U.F.F. basketball is designed to minimize injuries. Overly physical, reckless play is frowned upon. Examples of this would be diving for balls, low bridging, recklessly sacrificing your body, elbowing, charging and taking charges, etc....it's just not worth it.
Skill, finesse, fundamentals, savvy and team play are valued more than athleticism, brute strength and power.
We're here to have fun, fellowship and get some exercise.
Everyone is friends, part of a big basketball family.
